Who Qualifies for Free Treatment Following Indonesia's Free Health Checks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the government’s Free Health Check-up (CKG) program in 2026 will extend beyond free medical screenings, with the state also covering the cost of disease prevention and treatment following the examinations.

Speaking at a virtual press conference on Friday, January 23, 2026, Budi said the policy is designed to ensure that early detection is followed by concrete medical intervention, rather than stopping at diagnosis alone.

“Not only are the health check-ups free, but prevention and treatment are also covered,” Budi said while reviewing the program’s progress.

However, he noted that full coverage applies unconditionally only during the program’s initial 15-day period.

After that, free preventive and treatment services will be available exclusively to individuals who are actively enrolled in the national health insurance system, BPJS Kesehatan.

Those without active membership will be required to pay their own medical expenses.

“This free service applies to all 280 million Indonesians during the first 15 days. After that, it will only be free for BPJS members,” Budi said.

According to the minister, the policy reflects the government’s long-term effort to shift Indonesia’s healthcare system away from a curative approach toward a stronger emphasis on prevention and early intervention.

The free health check-up program, which began last year, is intended to identify health risks early and ensure follow-up care is provided.

At the same time, the scheme reinforces BPJS membership as a key requirement for accessing continued healthcare services. Budi urged Indonesians who are not yet enrolled to activate their coverage.

“The monthly premium is only tens of thousands of rupiah. It should be far less than what many people spend on cigarettes,” he said.
