TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick admitted that so far only one person has been approved to receive the "gold card" visa program from U.S. President Donald Trump. As reported by CNA, gold visa is a residency permit card worth millions of dollars launched last year.
Trump signed an order last September to create a program offering residency permits for $1 million. The program began accepting applications last December.
U.S. officials recently approved a gold visa application for one person, Lutnick told the U.S. House of Representatives committee on Thursday.
"And there are hundreds in the queue" who are going through the process, he added.
Applicants also have to pay a processing fee of $15,000 to the Department of Homeland Security. Lutnick said they will undergo "very serious scrutiny and analysis."
The "gold card" residency program charges $1 million for individuals and $2 million for company sponsorship.
The issuance of this visa coincides with Trump's order to add an annual $100,000 fee to H-1B skilled worker visas.
Initially, Trump said the new visa program would attract job creators and help reduce the national deficit.
Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has tightened immigration and his administration has carried out harsh deportation raids.
