Casualties Continue to Mount

According to a report by ABC News, much of Southeast Asia remains submerged due to the massive floods and landslides triggered by a series of cyclones and storms last week. Over 1,300 people have died in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, while hundreds are still missing.

In Indonesia, on Tuesday night, December 2, the government revised the death toll from 753 to 712, and around 500 people are still missing. The disaster management agency recorded 1.2 million evacuees in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh.

Sri Lanka reported 465 fatalities, and around 218,000 Sri Lankan citizens are now residing in temporary shelters. As reported by Anadolu, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of emergency last Saturday and sought international assistance after Cyclone Ditwah caused extensive damage.

Currently, Thailand has recorded 176 deaths. Thailand has deployed around 400 military personnel and volunteers to Hat Yai, Songkhla, the region that accounted for 126 of the total 176 fatalities. Lieutenant General Norathip Poinok mentioned that a major cleanup operation has commenced, involving the army, navy, territorial volunteers, and Ministry of Environment staff. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has declared a state of emergency in the province.

In Malaysia, floods have struck seven states near the Thai border, claiming three lives and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate. However, the situation is starting to improve. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced an allocation of RM500 million to repair public infrastructure and instructed all ministries to assess the damage and proceed with repairs.
