UN Chief Calls for an End to Global Arms Race

7 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday, March 5, called on world leaders to stop the arms race and invest in peacebuilding, rather than in the tools of war.

"Our dream of peace is in peril," Guterres warned in his message for International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness, as quoted by Antara.

"The threat of nuclear weapons use is the highest in decades," with global tensions pushing military spending to record levels, the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, and the use of new technologies making conflicts far more deadly, Guterres said.

The UN Secretary-General urged the international community to de-escalate tensions, calling on world leaders to avoid dangerous situations. "Stop rattling the nuclear saber. Halt the arms races," he stressed.

"It’s time to invest in the architecture of peace, not the tools of war," Guterres stressed. This means fulfilling disarmament obligations, rebuilding trust, and strengthening systems and instruments that prevent the proliferation, testing, and use of lethal weapons.

"Together, we can prevent catastrophes and ensure a safe and peaceful world for all," he said.

In December 2022, the UN General Assembly designated March 5 as the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness. The goal is to raise public awareness and understanding of disarmament issues, especially among young people.
