Trump Threatens to Impose 100 Percent Tariffs on Canada

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on Canada if Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney moves forward with his announced trade deal with China. In a statement shared on Truth Social on Saturday morning, as reported by Al Jazeera, Trump said Carney was "sorely mistaken" if he thinks Canada can become a transit port for China to ship goods and products to the United States.

"If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A," Trump wrote in the post. He referred to Carney as governor, not prime minister.

There was no immediate comment from Carney's office. Canada's minister responsible for Canada-US trade, Dominic LeBlanc, told X on Saturday that there was no effort to reach a free trade deal with China. Instead, he described the agreement announced last week between Ottawa and Beijing as a resolution to several important tariff issues.

"Canada’s new government is building a stronger Canadian economy, with a plan that is building our strength at home and strengthening our trading partnerships throughout the world," LeBlanc said.

Trump's tariff threats come amid rising tensions between Canada and the US this week after Carney delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Carney's speech was seen as a rebuke of the Trump administration's policies.

"We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition," Carney said in his speech. He urged the world's middle powers to deepen cooperation in the face of coercion and threats.

Mark Carney's remarks drew Trump's ire. "Canada lives because of the United States”. “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statement," Trump said in Davos.

Trump also revoked Carney's invitation to join the Council of Peace this week.

The US president has been threatening to impose high tariffs on Canadian goods since before he took office in January 2025. He has also repeatedly said he wants Canada to become the 51st state of the US.

This has plunged relations between the North American neighbors to a historic low. This has prompted Carney in recent months to seek new economic partnerships, including with China, the European Union, and Qatar.

Last week, the Canadian government announced a new strategic partnership with China after Carney traveled to the country for discussions with Chinese leaders.
