TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday, September 22, that the United States would continue to promote artificial intelligence (AI) and maintain its leadership in the technology in a safe and responsible manner, while rejecting international efforts to regulate AI.
The United States “totally rejects” any attempt to “construct a globalist scheme” to control AI, Trump said in his address during the general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
“I’m not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution,” Trump said, as cited by Xinhua.
He added that the United States would closely monitor AI through the Department of Justice and continue to lead the world in the technology “safely and responsibly.”
Trump also pushed for replacing the term “artificial intelligence” with “super intelligence.”
Calls for AI Risk Management
Xinhua also reported that several U.S. AI industry leaders have recently called for a coordinated slowdown in AI development, citing the prospect of the technology improving its capabilities autonomously and the possibility of humans losing control over it.
Earlier Tuesday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the growing risks associated with AI and autonomous weapons.
“Humans are increasingly handing over power to machines -- with Artificial Intelligence agents going rogue, and lethal autonomous weapons going from science fiction to military reality,” Guterres said.
Countries leading the AI technological revolution should share information on emerging safety risks, Guterres said. He also called for measures to manage AI risks, including the creation of a multilateral AI risk management framework.
Speaking at the UNGA general debate before Trump, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called for regulation of Big Tech companies and AI.
Lula warned against developing technology without rules, transparency or ethical boundaries.
