TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that the ceasefire in Gaza remains in place, despite Israel repeatedly launching attacks that have killed at least 97 Palestinian civilians. Trump emphasized that Washington wants to ensure peace between Israel and Hamas is maintained.
"We’re going to have to see what’s happening. We want to make sure that it’s going to be very peaceful with Hamas," Trump told reporters when asked about Israel's recent attacks as reported by Anadolu.
"As you know, they’ve been quite rambunctious. They’ve been doing some shooting. And we think maybe the leadership isn’t involved in that…you know, some rebels within," he said.
"But either way, it’s going to be handled properly. It’s going to be handled toughly, but properly," he added.
When asked if the ceasefire is still in place, the president replied: "Yes."
Previously, the Gaza government stated that at least 97 Palestinians have been killed and 230 others injured due to Israeli army attacks since the ceasefire was implemented in the Gaza Strip on October 10.
In a statement, the Gaza Government Media Office declared that "Israeli occupation committed 80 documented violations since the declaration of the ceasefire, in flagrant breach of international humanitarian law."
Hamas Disarmament
Trump also admitted that he has not set a deadline for Hamas to disarm based on the Gaza ceasefire agreement, but warned of the possibility of intervention if the resistance group fails to comply.
In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, as reported by Anadolu, Trump stated that he is "not giving a 'hard line,' but the U.S. will 'see how it all works out.'"
When pressed on whether he is confident that Hamas will genuinely hand over its weapons, Trump stated that the group has agreed to do so. He warned that if Hamas fails to do so, the U.S. will take firm action.
"They said they would… if we have to, we will disarm them," Trump said. "Whether it's me, the U.S., or it's a proxy, could be Israel, with our backing. We won't have boots on the ground."
The first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, consisting of 20 points, was reached between Israel and Hamas earlier this month based on a plan proposed by Trump.
The first phase of the agreement includes the exchange of Israeli hostages with Palestinian prisoners. The next phase involves the reconstruction of Gaza and the formation of a new government in the area without the involvement of Hamas.
Since October 2023, Israeli military aggression in Gaza has killed almost 68,000 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, and has made the region nearly uninhabitable.
