TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrated on October 20-21, 2025, is one of India’s most significant occasions and is observed in many other countries as well.
Beyond the dazzling lights and vibrant decorations, the festival is also known for its rich tradition of sweets, which play a central role in the celebrations.
Sweets during Diwali are more than just treats—they symbolize the sweetness of togetherness, prosperity, and blessings shared with family and friends. For culinary enthusiasts, here are seven traditional sweet recipes to try this Diwali.
1. Kaju Katli
Kaju Katli is a quintessential Diwali sweet, made from finely ground cashews cooked with sugar syrup and ghee, then cut into elegant diamond shapes. Often adorned with a thin layer of silver foil, this sweet combines a delicate balance of savory and sweet flavors, making it a favorite at festive gatherings.
2. Mava Modak
A variation of the traditional Modak, Mava Modak features mava (solidified condensed milk) mixed with sugar and cardamom. The mixture can be shaped into round forms, crescents, or even miniature floral designs. Unlike steamed Modaks, Mava Modak is ready to eat immediately, offering a tender and fragrant treat that represents blessings and prosperity.
3. Kalakand
Kalakand is a creamy milk-based sweet made from milk powder, ghee, and condensed milk cooked slowly to achieve a rich texture. Often garnished with pistachios and raisins, Kalakand melts in the mouth, delivering indulgence with every bite.
4. Coconut Ladoos
Coconut Ladoos are small, aromatic balls made from dried grated coconut, ghee, and condensed milk. Their light texture and fragrant coconut flavor make them ideal for snacking during festivities or sharing while socializing. They provide a perfect balance of sweetness without feeling heavy.
5. Pedas
Pedas are dense, long-lasting sweets made from mava and sugar, flavored with cardamom, and topped with almonds or cashews. Their rich texture and aromatic taste make them a staple for Diwali celebrations, suitable for gifting or storing for later enjoyment.
6. Besan Barfi
Besan Barfi offers a healthy yet indulgent option, made from roasted chickpea flour (besan), ghee, sugar, and condensed milk. Chilled until firm, this soft and flavorful sweet provides a unique savory-sweet profile, perfect for those seeking a lighter variation without compromising on taste.
7. Kesari Halwa
Kesari Halwa is a festive dessert from Indian cuisine, made from semolina, ghee, milk, sugar, and saffron, giving it a vibrant yellow hue and a fragrant aroma. Garnished with nuts and grated coconut, it adds both texture and flavor, bringing a warm and celebratory touch to the Diwali feast.
Whether served at family gatherings or shared with friends, these traditional sweets from Indian cuisine embody the joy, warmth, and festive spirit of Diwali.
