Trump-Carney Meeting Looms: What's the Real Issue?

3 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and United States President Donald Trump are set to meet. Trump and Carney spoke privately on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, cited from the National Post. Trump is planning a meeting with Carney sometime next week.

The Liberal Party under Mark Carney's leadership continued its dominance in Canada after winning the election on Monday, April 28, 2025. With this election result, the Liberal Party secured its fourth consecutive victory. Carney replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister, who was ousted on Monday, March 10, 2025.

Issues Between Trump and Carney

1. United States and Canada Relationship

Carney raised issues such as tariffs and the threat of annexation from Trump. In his victory speech, he stated that he would face Trump. He also emphasized to Trump that Canada has many options to make the country prosperous. On Monday, April 28, 2025, he said Canada will lead the global economy if the U.S. does not. Carney affirmed Canada masters in its house.

Carney stated that he would fight in various ways to obtain the best deal for Canada. He will make Canada the world's greatest country. He shall build Canada's independent future by protecting its workers and businesses.

2. Trade War

In early April 2025, Trump imposed new trade tariffs between the U.S. and several countries. The imposition of these tariffs received negative responses from several countries, including Canada.

Canada's Ambassador to Indonesia, Jess Dutton, said that the trade war, which began with the imposition of U.S. import tariffs on Canada, should not have been necessary. During the International Women's Day celebration at Le Meridien Jakarta on Thursday, March 6, 2025, Dutton said he believes this policy could damage the world's strongest economic relationship. He added that Canada would not remain silent about Trump's policy.

3. Trump Wants Canada to Become Part of the United States

Trump has repeatedly stated that Canada should become the 51st state of America. He also referred to Justin Trudeau, the former prime minister of Canada, as the governor of the Canadian state.

Jess Dutton said that Canada has never been a state of America. On Thursday, March 6, 2025, Dutton emphasized that Canada will never become the 51st state of the U.S.

Dutton said Trump's plan is not an issue recognized by Canadians.
