1. PSSI Extends Gratitude to Patrick Kluivert and His Coaching Staff After Tenure Ends
The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has expressed its gratitude to Patrick Kluivert and his coaching staff for their dedication and contribution to the national team, following the Dutch coach’s dismissal.
“After working intensively together for nearly 12 months, PSSI extends its highest appreciation to Coach Patrick Kluivert and his staff for their dedication and contribution to Indonesian football,” read a statement posted on PSSI’s official Instagram account on Thursday, October 16, 2025, shortly before noon Western Indonesia Time.
Kluivert was appointed head coach of the Indonesian national team on January 8, succeeding South Korea’s Shin Tae-yong, who was dismissed earlier that month during the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
2. Indonesian Minister Calls for Respect for Islamic Boarding School in Television Programs
Nasaruddin Umar, Indonesia's Minister of Religious Affairs, has urged all parties to uphold the dignity of pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) and forgive each other following the polemic surrounding one of the programs on Trans7 that was deemed offensive to the lives of santri (Islamic boarding school students). Nasaruddin believes that the tradition of forgiveness is strong in the pesantren culture. "I think that is very important for all of us. Hopefully, this is a learning experience for all of us," Nasaruddin said, as quoted from the official statement of the Ministry of Religion on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
The Xpose Uncensored program on Trans7 featured a satirical narrative that mentioned "even when a santri (Islamic boarding school students) drink milk, they have to squat" and "they have to squat when greeting a kiai (Islamic religious leaders)." This sparked protests from the pesantren community.
3. Patrick Kluivert Sacked as Indonesia National Team Coach After Failing to Qualify for 2026 World Cup
Patrick Kluivert has officially been dismissed as the coach of the Indonesian national team. The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) announced his dismissal on the federation's official account on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
In their statement, PSSI said that they and the national team coaching staff had agreed to end the cooperation early through mutual termination. Previously, Kluivert was under a two-year contract.
The dismissal came after Kluivert failed to lead Indonesia to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Garuda squad was eliminated after losing to Saudi Arabia 2-3 and Iraq 0-1 in the fourth round of Group B qualifying matches this October.
