TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has welcomed the decision by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) to part ways with national football team coach Patrick Kluivert. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi is urging the federation to quickly secure a replacement.
“The government welcomes the decision of the PSSI to terminate coach Patrick Kluivert, and [we urge them] as soon as possible to find his replacement,” said Minister Prasetyo in a video statement shared by the Presidential Secretariat on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
The Gerindra Party politician emphasized the importance of not losing hope despite the team's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. He added that the government remains committed to improving the quality of the national team, hoping "the dream of 287 million Indonesian people for the national team to compete in the World Cup can be realized."
PSSI officially announced the end of collaboration with Kluivert and his coaching team on Thursday, October 16, 2025, through a mutual termination mechanism, cutting short their initial two-year contract.
The federation stated that the decision was based on "internal dynamics and the strategic direction of the future national team development," as part of a "comprehensive evaluation of the national football development and coaching program." PSSI also expressed appreciation for the contributions of the coaching team during their tenure.
The termination follows Kluivert's failure to lead Indonesia to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Garuda squad was eliminated from the fourth round of Group B qualifying in October after losing to Saudi Arabia (2-3) and Iraq (0-1).
With the end of this agreement, Kluivert’s coaching staff will no longer oversee the Indonesian national team at the senior, U-23, or U-20 levels.
The 49-year-old Dutch coach and former Barcelona star was appointed as the head coach of the Indonesian national team on January 8, 2025, replacing South Korean Shin Tae-yong.
Although initially contracted for two years, the collaboration was terminated halfway through. In his short tenure, Patrick Kluivert managed a total of eight senior team matches.
