TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thai authorities have imposed martial law in the southern province of Narathiwat following an attack by an armed rebel group on a security post that killed five soldiers, according to a report by Thai PBS World, citing ANTARA.
The directive was issued on Thursday by the commander of special forces in Narathiwat, Major General Yod-Arwut Phuengpak, in response to an attack on a security post in the Ra-ngae region on Wednesday, July 22, that also injured six civilians.
Through the instructions, security forces are authorized to set up checkpoints on roads, search vehicles and homes suspected of being linked to rebel activities, and detain people suspected of involvement. Military personnel are also authorized to use force when necessary and proportionate to the threat faced.
The local military will be responsible for maintaining peace and public order in Narathiwat Province. Civil servants and local government officials in the security sector will work under the military's command.
Four provinces in southern Thailand, including Narathiwat, have large Malay Muslim populations and were part of the Patani kingdom in the past.
The insurgency in the region is rooted in ethnic and cultural conflicts between Malay Muslims living in southern Thailand and the Thai central government, where Buddhism is the de facto national religion.
The first armed rebel groups formed in the 1960s after Thailand's then military dictator attempted to intervene in Islamic schools, but faded in the 1990s.
Then, in 2004, a new armed movement was born that united several rebel groups into an organization called the National Revolutionary Front (BRN).
The conflict in southern Thailand is one of the world's deadliest low-intensity insurgencies.
