Sumatra Disaster Update: 1,200 Fatalities and 143 Missing

TEMPO.COJakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported 1,200 fatalities due to the Sumatra disaster as of Thursday, January 22, 2026. The highest number of deaths was recorded in North Aceh, with 245 victims.

"Meanwhile, Agam reported 194 fatalities, and Central Tapanuli reported 130 deaths. Furthermore, Aceh Tamiang recorded 101 deaths, and Central Tapanuli reported 93 deaths," stated the BNPB Geoportal Disaster Data site on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

There are still 143 people reported missing, an increase of two since Friday, January 16, 2026.

The number of evacuees across three provinces currently totals 131,900 people. The three areas with the highest concentration of displaced persons are North Aceh with 33,300 people, Gayo Lues with 18,900 people, and Pidie Jaya with 14,800 people.

The disaster also resulted in 170,050 damaged houses, consisting of 53,412 heavily damaged, 45,085 moderately damaged, and 76,553 lightly damaged structures. Meanwhile, 215 health facilities remain damaged, 4,546 educational facilities are damaged, 803 places of worship are damaged, and 810 bridges have been affected.

On Friday, January 16, 2026, the BNPB had recorded a total of 1,190 fatalities. At that time, the disaster had left 141 people missing.
