TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Romania is ready to allow the deployment of US military personnel and equipment at the Deveselu military base, Romanian President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
Romanian media reported that the United States had requested permission to use allied infrastructure to support its operations in the Middle East.
Earlier on Wednesday, Romania's Supreme Council of National Defense approved a US request for the temporary deployment of troops and military equipment on Romanian territory.
"The relevant US request has been reviewed and approved by the Supreme Defense Council. It concerns aircraft refueling, surveillance equipment, and satellite communications," Dan was quoted as saying by Romanian media, including Digi24.
The equipment is needed to support Washington's operations in the Middle East, the Romanian president added.
Earlier on February 28, the United States and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, including Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties.
Iran retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
Initially, the US and Israel claimed their "preventive" strikes were necessary to counter the perceived threat posed by Iran's nuclear program, but they soon made it clear they wanted a change of power in Iran.
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on the first day of the military operation. The Islamic Republic declared 40 days of mourning. Russian President Vladimir Putin described Khamenei's assassination as a violation of international law.
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the US-Israeli offensive and called for de-escalation and an immediate cessation of hostilities.
