Luhut: Indonesia's Fuel, LPG Supplies Remain Secure Amid Tensions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chair of the National Economic Council (DEN), Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, assured the public that the government has secured adequate supplies of fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) despite concerns over geopolitical disruptions.

"Overall, the national fuel supply remains at an adequate level, so there is no need to dwell on unfounded concerns about a transport fuel crisis. We have sufficient reserves to keep the supply stable," he said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Speaking after a meeting with senior officials from state energy firm Pertamina, Luhut said the situation is similar for the country’s LPG supply.

"The government, through Pertamina, has prepared concrete mitigation measures, ranging from optimizing refinery output to reconfiguring energy production and establishing coordination with global suppliers," he added.

The DEN chairperson noted that Pertamina has taken steps to increase production of the subsidized fuel Pertalite to meet gasoline demand.

The company has also held discussions with its gas subsidiary Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) to examine the possibility of redirecting LPG supplies from industrial users to households.

He added that Pertamina is also encouraging the use of compressed natural gas as an alternative energy source for industry in place of LPG.

Luhut said the government is strengthening coordination with relevant state companies to ensure sufficient supplies of fuel and LPG ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday and the annual homecoming travel period.

The meeting also discussed the latest situation involving two Pertamina vessels, namely Pertamina Pride and Gamsunoro, which remain stranded in the Persian Gulf and have not been able to return to Indonesia due to escalating conflict and deteriorating security conditions in the region.

He confirmed that both vessels and their crews are safe and not facing an emergency, although they are required to hold their position. He added that the government is in contact with the crews every four hours to monitor their safety and receive updates.

To reassure the public, Luhut said the government has seen indications that Group of Seven (G7) countries may release part of their oil reserves to help stabilize global supply, with regional tensions expected to ease in the coming weeks.

"We are optimistic that national energy reserves will suffice," he concluded.
