TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The White House states that American entrepreneurs welcomed the tariff agreement between the United States and Indonesia. The U.S. government said that entrepreneurs see the agreement as a step forward from the administration of Donald Trump.
"Indonesia will eliminate approximately 99 percent of tariff barriers for a full range of U.S. industrial and U.S. food and agricultural products exported to Indonesia," wrote the White House as quoted from the White House website, 23 July 2025.
President and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), Kevin Dempsey, stated that the trade agreement, which includes Indonesia's removal of export restrictions on minerals such as nickel, is crucial. According to him, the removal of nickel export restrictions has caused an imbalance in the global nickel market.
He said that the export ban and nickel restrictions have harmed steel producers in the United States. "With Indonesia's removal of its existing export restrictions on critical minerals, such as nickel, which is critical to stainless steel production," said Dempsey.
Morgan Reed, the president of the Competitive Technology Association, shared similar sentiments. He stated that for years, the Indonesian government has imposed tariffs on software and other digital devices. According to him, the agreement between the United States and Indonesia is a triumph for the development of small technology in the United States.
The National Corn Growers Association of the United States supports the agreement. The association views Indonesia as an important corn market for them. "We are pleased that corn and corn products will have duty free access in this deal and look forward to further negotiations that benefit U.S. corn growers," their press release stated, as reported by the office of the President of the United States.
Jonathan McHale, the vice president of the Computer and Communication Industry Association, said that the agreement addresses various trade barriers in Indonesia, including a tariff regime targeting digital products, cross-border data flow restrictions, and local content requirements for communication devices, and is an important and exciting step. "We look forward to a binding agreement addressing not only these restrictions, but a path to resolving all outstanding barriers that remain in this important market," he said.
The United States and Indonesia have reached an agreement on import tariffs. Trump agreed to reduce the import tariffs on Indonesian goods to the United States to 19 percent from the previous 32 percent. On the other hand, the Indonesian government agreed to impose a 0 percent or duty-free import tariff on goods from the United States. Not only that, Indonesia agreed to purchase energy from the U.S. worth US$15 billion, agricultural products worth US$4.5 billion, and 50 Boeing aircraft, most of which are Boeing 777s from the U.S.
