TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prince Harry is reportedly considering making a documentary about his mother, Princess Diana, to mark the 30th anniversary of her death next year, although no project has been finalized.
The Duke of Sussex has discussed several possible projects to commemorate the milestone and is still considering what would be the most meaningful way to honor Diana's legacy, according to USA TODAY, citing reports by People and The Telegraph on September 21.
Harry’s Possible Documentary Plans
Harry is understood to have approached friends and relatives of the late Princess of Wales about the possible project, including her brother, Earl Charles Spencer.
According to Metro, any documentary could be produced by Harry and Meghan Markle's Archewell Productions, with Netflix expected to be involved under the couple's existing deal with the streaming platform.
Harry and Meghan signed a production deal with Netflix after stepping back from their roles as senior working royals in 2020. In 2022, the couple released the six-part docuseries "Harry & Meghan," which explored their relationship and their decision to leave royal duties.
Harry and William’s Previous Diana Projects
Harry has previously participated in projects about his mother. As reported by USA Today, in 2017, he and his older brother, Prince William, appeared together in two documentaries marking the 20th anniversary of Diana's death: ITV's "Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy" and the BBC's "Diana, 7 Days." The programs featured people who had been part of Diana's life and inner circle.
It remains unclear whether Harry and William will reunite to commemorate the 30th anniversary. The brothers have remained estranged amid an ongoing rift within the royal family.
During Harry's visit to Britain in July, the two did not meet publicly despite being in separate locations roughly a dozen miles apart for different engagements.
Harry was 12 when Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, at the age of 36. He has spoken publicly about struggling to come to terms with her death for years.
In his 2023 memoir "Spare," Harry wrote that he once asked his driver to take him through the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris, where Diana's car crashed during a paparazzi pursuit. He described the experience as an attempt to find closure over his mother's death.
Diana’s Legacy and Earl Spencer’s Memoir
The reported documentary plans come as renewed attention surrounds Diana's legacy following the publication of a memoir by Earl Spencer.
In "Swan Song: Diana, My Sister," Spencer recounts his memories of his sister and makes claims about the aftermath of her death, including the way Harry and William experienced their mother's loss.
In extracts from the book, Spencer wrote that there had been a "lack of obvious care" for Harry following Diana's death and said the young prince was "allowed to spin out of control."
Spencer's memoir is also reported to include private conversations with Diana and claims about her relationship with then-Prince Charles. Buckingham Palace has responded to some of the claims, saying that grief can "cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory."
