TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo announced that Transjabodetabek will introduce several new routes this year. He emphasized that expanding these routes is essential to meet the growing mobility needs of Jakarta and its surrounding regions.

Pramono stated that the launch of the new city bus routes is scheduled in the coming months.

"Hopefully, in September or August, we will launch six new routes," said Pramono at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician added that the new routes would connect areas that currently rely heavily on private vehicles despite experiencing high traffic volumes. He specifically mentioned the Pantai Indah Kapuk area as an example.

According to Pramono, opening new routes will significantly improve public access to more parts of the city.

"This means that anyone can go there, and there should be no exclusivity from an area or place," he said.

Transjakarta Fare Increase Still Under Study

In addition to route expansion, Pramono also addressed the ongoing discussions about raising Transjakarta fares. He clarified that the matter is still being studied and no official proposal has been submitted yet.

"Until today, matters related to the Transjakarta proposal have not been submitted; it is still in the form of a study," Pramono explained.

Previously, Pramono discussed the proposal with the Jakarta City Transportation Council, but no final decision was made during the meeting held at City Hall on April 28, 2025.

Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo also commented on the issue. He noted that the current Transjakarta fare of Rp3,500 per passenger has been in place since 2005.

"As we know, the Transjakarta fare of Rp3,500 per passenger has been in effect since 2005, 20 years ago," Syafrin said at City Hall on Monday, April 28, 2025.

Syafrin pointed out that the fare adjustment plan has been discussed for years. He highlighted that when the Rp3,500 fare was set, Jakarta’s provincial minimum wage was around Rp800,000. Today, the minimum wage has risen to Rp5.39 million.

The idea of adjusting Transjakarta fares has surfaced before. In 2010, then-Governor Fauzi Bowo proposed increasing the fare from Rp3,500 to Rp5,000, although the plan was never implemented.

In 2020, five years before Pramono assumed office, PT Transportasi Jakarta also reviewed the fare structure. The then-CEO, Sardjono Jhony Tjitrokusumo, stated that the existing fare was no longer economically viable.

Jhony warned that if fares were not adjusted, the burden on Jakarta’s Regional Budget would grow. He suggested that a fare of around Rp5,000 would be more reasonable.

“This is based on ability to pay and willingness to pay,” Jhony said in South Jakarta on June 18, 2020.
