TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto said the Abadi Masela liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is a major national strategic project that has been awaited for nearly three decades before entering its construction phase.
"This Abadi Masela strategic project is extremely important. We have waited for this project for almost three decades. Alhamdulillah, today we are starting its development," Prabowo said during the virtual groundbreaking ceremony from the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.
Prabowo instructed that the project’s construction proceed according to schedule to ensure it delivers benefits to the public and strengthens Indonesia’s energy security.
"The development must not face delays. It must be completed as quickly as possible," he said.
Prabowo Highlights Energy Potential in Maluku
Prabowo said Indonesia has abundant energy resources that must be optimized to support the country’s future development.
He pointed to the energy reserves in Tanimbar, Maluku, as an example of Indonesia’s vast potential, noting that the resources had been identified decades ago.
"We have known for 28 years that the waters of Tanimbar in Maluku contain very large energy reserves," Prabowo said.
The president also expressed appreciation to all parties involved in developing the project, including Japan’s INPEX, Malaysia’s Petronas, and state-owned energy company Pertamina.
US$20.9 Billion LNG Project
The Abadi Masela LNG project, developed by INPEX Masela Ltd. in partnership with Pertamina and Petronas, has an estimated investment value of around US$20.9 billion.
The government expects the project to become one of Indonesia’s largest energy hubs in eastern Indonesia while strengthening national energy resilience, creating jobs, and supporting more balanced economic development across the country.
The project is located in the Masela Block in the Arafura Sea, Maluku, and is part of Indonesia’s National Strategic Projects (PSN) in the energy sector.
