Prabowo and King Charles III to Restore 57 National Parks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto and King Charles III have agreed to cooperate on ecosystem restoration and environmental preservation, specifically targeting Indonesian national parks. This Indonesia-UK agreement was reached during a cordial meeting in London, England, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, local time.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya explained that the primary focus of the meeting between the two leaders was cooperation in the field of environmental conservation. "Basically, there is cooperation and a commitment from the UK to assist Indonesia in improving ecosystems and enhancing the restoration of 57 national parks in Indonesia," Teddy stated at Stansted Airport, London, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, as quoted from a video statement on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube account.

According to Teddy, the partnership includes support for conservation efforts that have been and are currently underway in several strategic areas. One of these is Way Kambas National Park in Lampung, which is renowned as a center for Sumatran elephant conservation.

In addition to Way Kambas, conservation cooperation is also being implemented in the Peusangan area of Aceh. Teddy noted that this area consists of land owned by Prabowo, which has been handed over to the state for environmental preservation purposes.

Teddy mentioned that the total land area is approximately 90,000 hectares spread across several locations. However, not all of the land will be used specifically or entirely for elephant conservation. "It will be adjusted by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to determine which parts are for elephants and which are for other ecosystems," he said.

Prabowo Subianto met with King Charles III at Lancaster House in London on Wednesday morning. Prabowo arrived at Lancaster House before meeting with the King in the State Dining Room. They held a brief meeting before attending the main event of the Elephant Conservation Philanthropy Meeting at Peusangan.

During the main event, both leaders received a brief presentation regarding the Elephant Conservation Philanthropy Meeting from the CEO of the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance, Marc Palahi. Afterward, President Prabowo and King Charles were directed to the Grand Hall to attend the final session of the meeting.

When meeting King Charles III, Prabowo was accompanied by several officials, including Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and the Indonesian Ambassador to the UK, Desra Percaya. Two officials who are also members of Prabowo's family, namely the Special Envoy to the President for Energy and the Environment, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, and Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Budi Djiwandono, also participated in the conservation forum.

The meeting with King Charles III is part of Prabowo's working visit to the UK and Switzerland this week. In addition to meeting King Charles III, Prabowo also participated in several other activities. The Head of State met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, and several leaders of British universities.
