TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For three days, 21 candidates for the 2025-2030 Judicial Commission took turns answering questions from the Judicial Commission Member Selection Committee at the State Secretariat building in mid-September 2025. The committee also invited Pancasila University law professor Agus Surono and University of Indonesia law lecturer Febby Mutiara Nelson.
That day's interviews marked the final stage of the selection process. The committee would later choose seven names to be submitted to President Prabowo Subianto. "But so far, no candidates have been decided," said Selection Committee Chair Dhahana Putra on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.
There is something different in this year's selection process. It is more colorful, with strong indications of interference from politicians and state officials. On paper, the chosen names have yet to be announced. But even as the process unfolded, talk of 'suggested names' began circulating. The political aroma of this selection is far more pungent than in previous years.
The reason lies in the growing importance of the Judicial Commission, the only body authorized to screen and nominate candidates for Supreme Court justices to the House of Representatives (DPR). As political stakes in the judiciary rise, politicians have begun promoting their own favored candidates. The Supreme Court, after all, is where all legal disputes ultimately converge.
