TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian police deploy 1,743 personnel to secure the protest marking one year of the Prabowo-Gibran administration in Jakarta. One of the protests is organized by student organizations, including the All-Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM SI), in the National Monument or Monas area, Central Jakarta, today, October 20, 2025.
The Chief of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Grand Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro, said that the police were deployed to several strategic points. "Security personnel will act firmly to carry out their duties. We are ready to maintain security and order, while still prioritizing professionalism and a persuasive attitude in the field," said Susatyo in Jakarta on Monday, October 20, 2025.
Susatyo urged the students to express their opinions courteously. "Do not damage public facilities, do not burn tires, do not resist security personnel, and comply with applicable regulations," he said as quoted by Antara.
According to Susatyo, the police supervising the demonstration are not armed. He asked them to prioritize a humane approach in facing the protestors. However, Susatyo mentioned that the authorities would act in accordance with procedures and would not hesitate to take firm action if the situation became uncontrollable.
Susatyo advised road users to avoid the Monas area to prevent traffic jams. He said traffic engineering would be applied situationally depending on the number of people and the potential security disturbances.
BEM SI and the University of Indonesia (UI) Student Executive Board (BEM) plan to hold a demonstration titled #IndonesiaCemas on Monday, October 20, 2025. The date coincides with the one-year anniversary of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka's administration.
The Central Coordinator of the BEM SI Alliance, Muzammil Ihsan, confirmed their planned demonstration on Monday. "Yes, that's correct," he said on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
This protest is based on the current conditions of the people who are having difficulty finding jobs and facing an increasing cost of living. "Looking at the momentum of one year of the Prabowo-Gibran administration, it makes us increasingly worried about the future of Indonesia," reads the invitation poster by BEM SI.
The demonstration will demand and push for policies that are not pro-people to be revoked. The gathering point for the demonstration is at the Arjuna Wijaya Statue, Central Jakarta. The demonstration will begin at 13:00 WIB.
Posters for the protest by BEM UI are also circulating on social media. The official Instagram post @bemui_official also contains an invitation to a demonstration with a similar title to BEM SI.
