TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Osing Kemiren Traditional Tourism Village in Banyuwangi, East Java, has been recognized as one of the Best Tourism Villages Upgrade Programme 2025 by the United Nations Tourism, a body under the United Nations.
Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani expressed her pride in the international achievement of the Osing Kemiren Traditional Tourism Village.
"This achievement is the result of the spirit of cooperation and the strong commitment of the Banyuwangi community, especially the residents of Kemiren, in preserving culture and developing sustainable tourism," she said in Banyuwangi on Sunday, October 19, 2025, as quoted from Antara.
Ipuk stated that this achievement is a result of the strength of local culture and the development of tourism that is in line with the environment and local wisdom.
"Kemiren Village has shown that a village with a strong cultural heritage can progress and gain international recognition without losing its identity, and this is an encouragement for us to continue to strengthen an inclusive, sustainable, and culturally based tourism ecosystem," she said.
The recognition of Kemiren Traditional Tourism Village as one of the Best Tourism Villages in the world was announced during the Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism 2025 Ceremony & Third Annual Network Meeting, in Huzhou, China, on Friday, October 17, 2025.
This year, the event was participated in by over 270 tourism villages from 65 United Nations Tourism member countries, which were then selected through a rigorous assessment process by independent experts.
The independent assessors evaluated candidates based on several main criteria, including the potential and preservation of natural and cultural resources, economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
Tourism development and the integration of local value chains, governance, infrastructure, as well as the security and safety of tourists.
Following a rigorous selection process, 72 villages from Africa, America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East were selected to be part of the Best Tourism Villages Network.
With the selection of Kemiren Village, the village predominantly inhabited by the Osing ethnic group, which is the indigenous tribe of Banyuwangi, has become part of the global rural destination network under UN Tourism.
