TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police deployed more than 1,700 personnel to secure a student demonstration marking the first anniversary of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s administration.
The rally, organized by the All-Indonesia Executive Board of the Student Senate (BEM SI), took place around the Arjuna Wijaya Statue area in Central Jakarta on Monday, October 20, 2025.
Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner General Susatyo Purnomo Condro said 1,743 officers were mobilized to maintain order during the protest. He emphasized that demonstrations are a constitutional right and assured that the police would take a humanistic approach.
"We will maintain a conducive atmosphere so that the messages conveyed can be well-received," Susatyo said in a written statement.
Students Call Prabowo-Gibran’s First Year ‘A Year of Problems’
The demonstration carried the theme “Indonesia Cemas” (Concerned Indonesia) and echoed the slogans #1TahunCukup (One Year Is Enough) and #1TahunMasalahBeruntun (One Year of Continuous Problems).
BEM SI Central Coordinator Muzammil Ihsan said the protest reflected the students’ disappointment with the government’s first-year performance, which they view as failing to prioritize the interests of the people.
"Many government policies have instead created new problems, widened inequality, and weakened democracy," Muzammil told Tempo on Monday.
One of the students’ key demands is a full evaluation of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, which they say has faced issues in implementation. "Cases of food poisoning linked to MBG show that the program has not benefited ordinary people but rather served as a political project," he added.
Calls to End Intimidation and Militarism
The protesters also denounced the authorities’ repressive actions in recent demonstrations and demanded the release of all detained activists. They urged an end to intimidation, violence, and criminalization against civilians, academics, and journalists.
BEM SI further criticized the growing defense and security budget amid ongoing economic hardship. The group called for transparency in spending and insisted that the military’s role be limited to national defense.
"Militarism in civilian life must be stopped," Muzammil wrote in a statement.
The students also called for a comprehensive evaluation of the Red and White Cabinet and the removal of ministers deemed problematic, including the ministers of environment, energy and mineral resources, law and human rights, and forestry.
Other demands include halting the food estate project, which they claim is damaging the environment, and dissolving regional military commands.
They also urged the swift passage of several pro-people bills, such as the Asset Seizure Bill, the Domestic Workers’ Protection Bill (PPRT), and the Indigenous Peoples Legal Community Bill.
