Palestine's Mahmoud Abbas 'Insulting' Remark on Hamas Draws Flak

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe internal clash between Palestinian factions has reached a boiling point after President of the Palestinian Authority (PA) Mahmoud Abbas issued condemnations against Hamas. As reported by Al Jazeera on Thursday, he urged Hamas to release the Israeli hostages and referred to them as "sons of dogs."

This controversial statement immediately sparked anger from Hamas and other resistance groups, highlighting a wider divide amidst the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

"Abbas repeatedly and suspiciously lays the blame for the crimes of the occupation and its ongoing aggression on our people," said Hamas senior official Basem Naim, referring to Abbas' remark as "insulting."

Abbas' verbal attack occurred during a meeting in Ramallah, where he openly accused Hamas of providing "excuses" for Israel to launch attacks on Gaza by holding hostages.

"I’m the one paying the price, our people are paying the price, not Israel. My brother, just hand them over," stated Abbas before proceeding with the crude term.

This conflict highlights the political and ideological divide that has separated Abbas' Fatah party and Hamas for nearly two decades.

This internal strife further complicates the effort to unite the Palestinian voice amidst the conflict that has claimed the lives of nearly 51,400 Gaza residents, the majority being women and children.

The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement, a group that separated from Abbas' Fatah, also strongly condemned the statement and demanded an official apology. They accused Abbas' leadership of “criminalizes the resistance and absolves the occupation of its ongoing crimes.”

Meanwhile, ceasefire negotiations mediated by Egypt and Qatar continue in Cairo with the Hamas delegation but have yet to yield concrete results. Since Israel's resumption of strikes on March 18, nearly 2,000 more lives have been lost, adding to the long list of casualties in this bloody genocidal war.
