Mountaineer Missing for a Week on Mount Binaiya, Search Efforts Ongoing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 27-year-old mountaineer named Firdaus Ahmad Fauzi has been reported missing since April 26, 2025, while descending Mount Binaiya in Maluku. He disappeared along the Waifuku-Isilali Post 4 route and has not been located despite continued search efforts.

Rescue teams are still combing sections of Manusela National Park, focusing on dense and difficult terrain.

"Up to this point, we have not found Firdaus," said Yoman Elly, Head of the Saunulu Resort at Manusela National Park, when contacted on Friday night, May 2, 2025.

Yoman explained that the park authority shared a detailed timeline of the incident based on a report from Yusuf, the guide who was leading Firdaus and his group. Tempo attempted to contact the guide, but his phone was unreachable.

As of today, Firdaus has been missing for seven days in the 3,027-meter high mountain region. The park’s statement noted that a group consisting of five climbers, two porters, and one guide encountered the Forestry Police Patrol at Isilali Post at 17:30 WIT on April 26. They promptly reported that one of their members had gone missing during the descent.

Firdaus was last seen near Nasapeha, a moss-covered forest area often used as a rest stop. After realizing he was missing, Yusuf and one porter immediately began searching, but were unsuccessful. The park’s patrol team joined the effort soon after.

"After receiving this information, the Patrol Team also assisted in searching for the survivor. However, Firdaus has not been found," according to Manusela National Park’s written statement.

The search resumed the following day, covering the Bintang peak and Nasapeha areas, but there were no results. Firdaus had no food supplies when he vanished—only three water bottles and three headlamps in his backpack. Weather conditions at the time were reportedly windy and foggy.

Firdaus, a resident of Cibungbulang, Bogor, West Java, began his ascent via Negeri Piliana in the Tehoru District, which serves as the southern access point to the mountain. The northern route starts from Negeri Kanikeh in North Seram, both located in Central Maluku Regency. There are four designated rest posts on the southern trail: Yamhitala, Aimoto, High Camp, and Isilali.

Tempo reached out to Firdaus’s family via Instagram (@_ichsanskuter), who confirmed they are currently in Piliana monitoring the search. While they did not provide further details, they confirmed that Firdaus disappeared while trekking on Mount Binaiya.

"Yes, the news is accurate," they said on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
