TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two people were killed and 17 others injured after a Mexican Navy ship, on a training exercise, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday night, May 17, 2025. On X, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said last night, the Mexican Navy's tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and collided with the Brooklyn Bridge.
“At this time, of the 277 on board, 19 sustained injuries, 2 of which remain in critical condition, and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries,” he said as quoted by Al Arabiya.
Onlookers enjoying the cool spring evening watched in horror as the ship's sails furled and party lights adorning the rigging attempted to pass under the bridge. The ship's masts were broken and toppled into the East River for evacuation.
Several U.S. media reports indicated that sailors were on the ship's rigging when it struck the bridge. The Mexican Navy stated in its release that no one fell into the water, and no rescue operation has been launched.
The victims were taken to local hospitals, as The New York Post reported.
According to some U.S. media reports, around 200 people were aboard the Cuauhtemoc, a ship built in 1982 with a mast height of 48.2 meters (158 feet).
The Cuauhtémoc had been on a training manoeuvre at the time and was damaged in the “mishap,” said the Mexican Navy in a separate statement on X.
“The Ministry of the Navy reaffirms its commitment to the safety of its personnel, transparency in its operations and excellence in the training of future officers of the Mexican Navy,” it said.
