TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Indonesian Meat Traders Association (APDI) will stage a sales strike starting today in response to the high price of live cattle. "We will stop selling (a sales strike) as a form of protest and concern," said APDI Chairperson Wahyu Purnama, in a written statement on Monday, January 19, 2026.

The sales strike begins today, Thursday, January 22, and runs through Saturday, January 24, 2026. Wahyu said this action will be held at all markets and slaughterhouses throughout Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area.

In a written statement, Wahyu stated that the sales strike was initiated because the government failed to implement the results of a meeting held on January 5, 2026, with the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture and related agencies regarding guarantees for stable live cattle prices.

Furthermore, Wahyu stated that the price of live cattle from feedlots is too high, and that carcasses from slaughterhouses have also increased. Amidst the price hike, Wahyu highlighted the weakening purchasing power of the public.

Wahyu stated that APDI's stance represents beef cattle dealers and meat traders throughout Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek). Wahyu explained that the decision to strike was based on the aspirations and opinions of APDI members and lower-middle-class consumers who feel severely impacted by the high price of beef.

With this in mind, APDI decided to hold a strike as a form of protest by traders against the high price of beef.

APDI also hopes that the Minister of Agriculture and the Head of the National Food Agency, Amran Sulaiman, will immediately take concrete steps to stabilize prices. "For the sake of the people's livelihoods and the sustainability of downstream MSMEs," Wahyu said.
