TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Commission XI Deputy Chair Fauzi Amro said President Prabowo Subianto had made the right decision in appointing Suahasil Nazara as finance minister, replacing Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa.
Fauzi said Suahasil had extensive experience in macroeconomic and microeconomic policy, as well as monetary and fiscal affairs. He also noted that Suahasil had served as deputy finance minister under both former Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Purbaya.
"He is the right person, a solution-oriented figure, and a source of hope for everyone to improve the fiscal and economic systems," Fauzi said in Jakarta on Monday, September 14, 2026.
He said changes to the cabinet were the president's prerogative, as the president was entitled to objectively assess officials' performance, capacity, and capabilities in responding to economic conditions.
Fauzi said Indonesia was currently facing global pressures and significant economic challenges.
He also said the government needed to address issues ranging from the microeconomic sector and the quality of state revenues and spending to regional fiscal transfers.
"Those are inseparable parts of the finance minister's responsibilities," Fauzi said.
Fauzi said Commission XI expected Suahasil to address unfinished tasks left by Purbaya, including efforts to optimize tax revenue, customs and excise revenue, and non-tax state revenue (PNBP).
"So, God willing, he understands and knows very well the state of our economy today," he said.
Earlier on Monday, Prabowo sworn in Suahasil as finance minister, replacing Purbaya, in a ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta.
Suahasil's appointment was stipulated in Presidential Decree No. 97P of 2026 on the Dismissal and Appointment of the Finance Minister of the Red and White Cabinet for the remainder of the 2024-2029 term. The decree was issued by Prabowo on September 14, 2026.
