TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - England midfielder Jude Bellingham has set a new record as the country's highest-scoring player in a single major tournament, surpassing previous FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship records.
The Real Madrid star finished the 2026 FIFA World Cup with seven goals after scoring in England's dramatic 6-4 victory over France in the third-place playoff at Miami Stadium, United States, on Sunday.
Bellingham had previously scored once each against Croatia and Panama during the group stage. He then added two goals against Mexico in the round of 16 and two more in England's quarterfinal victory over Norway.
His seven-goal tally made Bellingham the first England player to score seven goals in a single major tournament, breaking the previous record held by Harry Kane and Gary Lineker, who each scored six goals in a World Cup campaign.
Kane had entered the match against France with six goals in the 2026 World Cup, level with Bellingham. However, England's captain was left out of the squad for the third-place playoff, preventing him from matching or surpassing the Real Madrid midfielder's record.
Bellingham is now two goals ahead of Alan Shearer, who scored five goals when England reached the semifinals of Euro 1996.
Other England players who have scored four goals in a single major tournament include Kane at Euro 2020, Lineker at the 1990 World Cup, Wayne Rooney at Euro 2004, and Sir Geoff Hurst at the 1966 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Bukayo Saka's hat-trick against France saw him match his World Cup 2022 goal tally, with the Arsenal forward now having scored three goals in each of his two World Cup appearances.
