TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Anime has brought the Japanese school experiences and stories to the rest of the world. This undoubtedly piqued the curiosity of many who want to experience it firsthand, but due to distance, age, and nationality, attending a real high school in Japan is impossible for most people.
This changes with the existence of "Kimino High School," which translates to "Your High School." Tourists are now welcome to get a taste of a real and dramatized rural Japanese high school, welcoming of all ages and nationalities.
Despite only lasting a full day, travelers will experience a bit of everything a local student does, including the graduation ceremony.
The classroom experience is organized by the event organizer company Undokai. The program dovetails the government's plan to divert tourists from overcrowded areas like Tokyo and Kyoto to rural regions, according to Japan Today.
One-Day Tour Program at Japanese High School
According to Soranews24, guests will have a full-day schedule, starting with homeroom followed by Japanese class, lunch, social studies class, sports festival, cleaning time, and graduation ceremony. After that, the event continues with a Japanese-style festival, often depicted in slice-of-life anime and other works.
Kimino High School is modeled after high schools from the Showa era of the 70s/80s (1926-1989). The school uses props and uniforms appropriate to the era.
There might even be some mischievous students from rival schools appearing and other surprises during the tour. The tour includes some anachronistic but fun experiences, such as tasting sake and the opportunity to wear a randoseru backpack, typically used in elementary schools.
Supporting the Local Community
This one-day tourism program is not only fun for foreign tourists but also helps the local community. Kimino High School, previously known as Kameyama Junior High School, is located in CAMPiece Kimitsu, Kimitsu City, Chiba Prefecture.
The school had been long abandoned and no longer in use due to the declining population, like many schools across Japan.
By enrolling at Kimino High School, tourists not only make use of this underutilized facility but also contribute to the shrinking economy of Kimitsu and help revitalize the area.
Despite being a rural area, this place is only about an hour away from Haneda Tokyo Airport. In addition to experiencing high school life in Japan, tourists can also enjoy camping or hot springs if they stay overnight.
The base price for a full-day schedule is 35,000 yen or almost Rp4 million per person. Classes can be conducted in English or Japanese, allowing tourists from various countries to participate. This enables anime fans, such as those of Jujutsu Kaisen and the romantic comedy Ouran High School Host Club, to enjoy this experience.
