TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta government has prepared several measures to address the impact of extreme heat this week. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) previously stated that the daily maximum temperature in Jakarta and its surrounding areas is rising, especially during the day. The air temperature in Jakarta even reached 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday afternoon, October 16, 2025.
Special staff to the governor, Chico Hakim, said Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has instructed several agencies to act based on existing data. Mitigation is taking place on various fronts, from weather modification to public education. "This is part of our commitment to face the challenges posed by climate change," he said, quoted from the written statement of the Jakarta Provincial Government on Thursday afternoon.
On October 14, 2025, the maximum temperature in several regions in Indonesia reached 34-37 degrees Celsius. Triggered by the apparent movement of the sun and the Australian Monsoon, BMKG stated that the extreme heat could persist until the end of this month or early November 2025.
In line with Pramono's instructions, the Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) will continue the Weather Modification operation (OMC) to regulate rainfall distribution and reduce the heat intensity.
The Jakarta Health Agency is asked to bolster the readiness of healthcare facilities to handle cases related to extreme heat, such as dehydration, heatstroke, and acute respiratory infections. The Health Agency will also launch a public education campaign to reduce outdoor activities during peak heat hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
"The public is advised to ensure adequate water intake and to seek shade," said Chico.
Residents use umbrellas to avoid the heat in the Bundaran HI area, Jakarta, on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. Based on the analysis of BMKG meteorology experts until Monday afternoon (28/10), the highest heat was recorded in the Larantuka area, East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, reaching 38.4 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest Agency as well as the Jakarta Environment Agency are tasked to expedite the tree planting program to reduce the urban heat island effect. They are also instructed to strengthen the drainage system to prevent tidal floods.
Other mitigation plans include engaging local communities to disseminate warnings to pedestrians and cyclists. "And accelerating the development of environmentally friendly transit city," said Chico.
