Jakarta Governor Optimistic Not All Meat Traders Will Join Sales Strike

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said some meat traders will continue their business despite the regionwide strike planned by the Indonesian Meat Traders Association for the next three days until January 24. According to Pramono, the association can't bar all of its members from selling their products.

"I have checked, and there is some intention, but I am certain they will continue selling in Jakarta," said Pramono when met in West Jakarta on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

The Indonesian Meat Traders Association (APDI) announced that they will go on strike from Thursday to Saturday to protest the high price of live cattle.

"We will stop selling (a sales strike) as a form of protest and concern," said APDI Chairperson Wahyu Purnama, in a written statement on Monday, January 19, 2026.

Wahyu said this action will be held at all markets and slaughterhouses throughout Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area. He emphasized that this decision represents the aspirations of meat traders and cattle dealers who feel that the high prices are affecting their businesses.

"This strike is based on the opinions of APDI members and the lower middle-class community who are heavily affected," he stated.

APDI further stated that the government has not followed up on the meeting results between traders, the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health of the Ministry of Agriculture, and related agencies regarding the stability of live cattle prices earlier this month.

Wahyu stated that the price of live cattle from feedlots is too high, and that carcasses from slaughterhouses have also increased. Amidst the price hike, Wahyu highlighted the weakening purchasing power of the public.

Wahyu stated that APDI hopes the Minister of Agriculture and the Head of the National Food Security Agency will take concrete steps to stabilize meat prices. This is considered crucial for the livelihood of many people as well as for the sustainability of micro, small, and medium-sized businesses in the downstream beef industry.
