TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel on Thursday, October 23, 2025, froze the bill regulating the plan to annex the occupied West Bank. The draft law previously passed the initial vote in the Knesset, Israel's parliament, a day earlier.

Ofir Katz, the head of the Israeli government coalition, stated in a release as quoted by Antara that the bill for West Bank full annexation and the annexation of the large-scale settlement Maale Adumim near Jerusalem would not be advanced until further notice.

The Israeli parliament on Wednesday, October 22, voted in support of these two bills to apply Israeli law and administration to all settlements in Maale Adumim and the West Bank. The vote took place during the visit of US Vice President JD Vance to Israel.

Speaking to the media at Ben Gurion International Airport outside Tel Aviv before his departure last Thursday, Vance called the vote a "political stunt" that has no practical significance.

"If it was a political stunt, it was a very stupid political stunt, and I personally take some insult to it," said Vance.

Israeli PM Netanyahu's office stated that the parliament's vote on annexation "was a deliberate political provocation by the opposition to sow discord during U.S. Vice President JD Vance's visit to Israel."

The statement explained that the Likud Party, led by Netanyahu, "did not vote for these bills... Without Likud support, these bills are unlikely to go anywhere."

Trump Threatens Israel

US President Donald Trump asserted that Israel would lose all US support if it annexes the West Bank, Palestine, and derails the ceasefire deal in Gaza.

Trump stated on Thursday that the annexation won't happen because he has promised the Arab countries, and the U.S. has obtained significant support from them.

"Israel would lose all of its support from the United States if that happened," he told the Time daily when asked about the consequences if Israel annexes the West Bank.

A senior U.S. official also issued a strong warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that if he allows the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas to collapse, he will face severe consequences from U.S. President Donald Trump, as reported by Channel 12 Israel, on Thursday, as quoted by Anadolu.

Speaking in Hebrew on Channel 12, Axios correspondent Barak Ravid said that the US official warned him that Netanyahu is "walking a very thin tightrope with President Trump. If he keeps this up, he’ll end up screwing up the deal, and if he screws up the deal, Donald Trump will screw him."
