TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An analysis by the New York Times, referenced by Anadolu on Wednesday, found that at least 17 military, diplomatic, and defense sites of the United States across the Middle East have been damaged by drone and missile attacks from Iran since the joint attack on Iran by Israel and Washington.
Eleven of the damaged sites are military bases or installations, representing nearly half of all American facilities in the region.
The most costly damage occurred to the air defense system, with satellite images showing damage to the $1.1 billion early-warning radar near Umm Dahal, Qatar, designed to provide coverage within a 4,800-kilometer radius.
Iran successfully targeted components of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, known as THAAD, according to the analysis.
Pentagon's assessment puts the damage to the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, which was attacked on February 28, at around $200 million, according to a congressional official cited by the newspaper.
The Iranian strikes also damaged U.S. diplomatic facilities, forcing the temporary closure of the consulate in Dubai and embassies in Kuwait City and Riyadh. There are no reports of casualties from the attacks.
U.S. officials told the media that the attacks showed Iran's readiness for war beyond what many in the Trump administration had anticipated.
The conflict in the Middle East has escalated since Israel and the U.S. launched a joint attack on Iran on February 28. The attack has claimed over 1,300 casualties to date, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and members of his family.
About 140 U.S. military personnel have been injured, including eight fatalities, since the start of the retaliatory campaign by Iran.
