TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has positioned the KHAN missile in the 18th Field Artillery Battalion under the Military Regional Command VI/Mulawarman in East Kalimantan Province. This ballistic missile was procured from Turkey in 2022.
Only one batch of the KHAN missile has been delivered to the TNI. The Head of the Army's Information Service, Brigadier General Wahyu Yudhayana, stated that in early 2026, his department would receive the second batch of KHAN missiles.
"Once they are handed over, they can be totally operationally deployed to the Army," he said in Monas, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
He explained the reasons for placing the ballistic missile in the province, which is expected to become the future capital of the archipelago. According to him, the selection of the location for placing the ballistic missile was based on various considerations. "It's based on defense concepts, namely being able to reach all areas of the homeland," Wahyu said.
By being stationed in East Kalimantan, the range of the KHAN missile is considered to safeguard the concept of the five major islands as per the adopted defense system. In addition, Wahyu stated that the border lines can also be secured from that area.
"The definite goal is to strengthen Indonesia's defense system," Wahyu said.
The ballistic missile has a range of 280 kilometers and weighs around 2,500 kilograms. It has a high-explosive warhead that weighs 470 kilograms. The KHAN missile can accurately hit a target using an inertial guidance system or an inertial guidance system supported by GNSS.
The KHAN missile is controlled by an electromechanical actuation system that uses aerodynamic control. This missile can be launched from the KHAN Weapon System, which is manufactured by Roketsan, as well as from other platforms that are compatible with the appropriate interface for integration.
The launcher is equipped with the necessary mechanical, electrical, and electronic subsystems to perform various tasks such as mission planning, deployment, and ballistic calculations.
