TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vessels passing through the Java Sea have reportedly spilling oil waste in the waters in the northern coast of Java (locally known as pantura) near Tanjung Burung Village, Teluknaga District, Tangerang Regency, Banten. The information was obtained on December 3, 2025, through a video taken by a fisher, which was later uploaded on social media.
The video footage shows thick crusts and yellowish liquid spreading across several areas off the Tanjung Burung coasts.
The crusts appear to be separate from the seawater.
The fishers suspect the liquid to be waste pollution. "What kind of waste is this? How can we catch fish like this?" the fishers queried in the video, adding that the spillage likely comes from the direction of Priok.
The head of the Legal Department of the Tangerang Regency Environmental Office, Sandi Nugraha, confirmed the reports about the suspected pollution. The office, Sandi said, has forwarded the report to the Banten Provincial Government and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. "We are awaiting further handling," added Sandi.
According to Sandi, based on the reports and statements from the fishers, the clumps of yellowish liquid are believed to be crude oil waste spilled from tankers sailing off the Cirebon coasts.
To verify the existence of this waste pollution, the Tangerang Regency Government has reported the case to the Ministry of Environment as research material. "Research falls under the ministry's authority, from which we can verify about the pollution," said Sandi.
