TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian crew member was killed when motor vessel (MV) Serdal sank in Seychelles on May 29, 2025. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the Indonesian Embassy in Madagascar, is handling the case.

Reported by Antara, the commercial vessel MV Serdal carried 11 crew members, consisting of nine Indonesian nationals and two Nepali citizens.

In the accident, an Indonesian citizen with the initials MB was declared dead by local authorities, while the other 10 crew members were successfully rescued.

Based on information obtained from local authorities, the director of Citizen Protection, Judha Nugraha, in his statement to the media crew on Sunday night, said that the Comoros-flag MV Serdal was sailing towards the Comoros Islands.

However, on May 29, 2025, at 09.00 local time, the ship overturned in the waters near Seychelles while performing logistical transit due to sudden bad weather and high waves.

According to the Indonesian Embassy in Antananarivo, based on information obtained, the shipping company will be fully responsible for resolving the issue.

In accordance with the regulations in Seychelles, the body of MB is undergoing an autopsy process, while three of the 10 survivors are currently undergoing outpatient care.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Antananarivo will continue to provide assistance to Indonesian citizens, including helping with the issuance of lost documents and the repatriation process, said Judha Nugraha.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy also continue to monitor the investigation process carried out by the Seychelles authorities to uncover the exact cause of the sinking of the MV Serdal.
