TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Archbishop of Jakarta, Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, stated that he will only depart for the Vatican on May 4th to attend the conclave to determine the successor of the late Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. Cardinal Suharyo will be absent from Pope Francis' funeral this weekend.
"I will not be in the initial group to attend the funeral. I will only depart to attend the conclave," he said when met at Jakarta Cathedral on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
Cardinal Suharyo mentioned that the Indonesian Catholic Church will only send one representative to attend Pope Francis' funeral, Bishop of Bandung, Antonius Subianto Bunjamin.
Meanwhile, from the government delegation, Law and Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai, Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Djiwandono, and Indonesian 7th President Joko Widodo will attend. Former Minister of Transportation and Energy Ignasius Jonan, who also chaired the committee for Pope Francis' welcoming to Indonesia on September 3-6, 2024, will also be part of the government delegation.
Regarding the conclave, Cardinal Suharyo stated that its implementation will only start 15 days after the Pope's passing. Suharyo said the conclave might be held as early as May 6. However, according to him, the decision may change depending on the readiness.
He mentioned that he has no specific preparations to attend the conclave. However, he plans to meet several cardinals in the Vatican before the election of the new Pope.
Suharyo is the only cardinal in Indonesia who qualifies to attend the conclave. One of the qualifications met is his age, which is still below 80 years. Currently, Cardinal Suharyo is 74 years old. This conclave will be the first for the Archbishop of Jakarta.
The official Vatican website mentioned that out of the total 252 cardinals currently, 135 are eligible to vote for the next person to fill the Vatican Holy See. They all have the right to be elected and choose the new Pope.
