Indonesia-UK Launch Economic Growth Partnership for Businesses

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and the UK have forged a new economic partnership through the establishment of the Economic Growth Partnership (EGP) in an effort to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The partnership was formalized during President Prabowo Subianto's working visit to the United Kingdom.

The agreement between the two countries was marked by the signing of the Arrangement between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to Establish an Economic Growth Partnership. Indonesia was represented by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, while the UK was represented by Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle MP.

Airlangga conveyed that the cooperation serves as an important foundation for promoting increased economic cooperation, trade, investment, and innovation between the two countries. "The strategic economic cooperation document is a tangible form of both countries' commitment to building inclusive, sustainable, and mutually beneficial economic growth," Airlangga said, as quoted by Antara on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

The signing of the economic cooperation document is one of the main pillars in the Accord for a New Indonesia-United Kingdom Strategic Partnership launched by President Prabowo Subianto and the UK Prime Minister. For Indonesia, the cooperation is also in line with the goal of achieving an 8 percent economic growth target.

Airlangga explained that the agreement is designed as a practical and business-oriented framework for cooperation. The partnership includes several priority sectors such as clean energy, the digital economy, finance, education, infrastructure, and transportation.

It also covers agriculture and food, health and life sciences, the strengthening of supply chains, as well as trade and sustainable development. Through this partnership, Indonesia and the UK are expected to be able to optimize the economic potential of each country amid the dynamics of the global economy.

Airlangga emphasized that the UK is one of Indonesia's strategic partners in the European region. In 2024, the value of Indonesia-UK trade reached US$2.78 billion and has shown an increasing trend since 2020, with mutually complementary trade patterns.

Meanwhile, UK investment realization in Indonesia reached US$402.6 million in the third quarter of 2025, particularly in mining, food industry, agriculture, as well as industrial and service areas.

At the same time, Secretary Kyle stated that the strategic economic cooperation reflects the joint commitment of both governments to strengthen bilateral economic relations and open up broader collaboration opportunities between the two countries' governments and businesses.

Both ministers also emphasized that President Prabowo Subianto's visit to the UK is an important milestone marking the increasingly strong strategic relationship between Indonesia and the UK, and expressed appreciation to the negotiating team for their hard work and achievements.
