TEMPO.COJakarta - The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections has deported American national Tommy Schaefer (TS). The deportation was carried out on Tuesday night, February 24, 2026.

The Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Immigration, Felucia Sengky Ratna, stated that TS was deported following his release in connection with a murder case in the Nusa Dua area. He had been incarcerated at the Class IIA Kerobokan Penitentiary for a premeditated murder committed in 2014.

"After TS completed his sentence, our responsibility was to ensure that he no longer remained within our sovereign territory, given the gravity of the crimes he committed, which disrupted public order and legal norms," Sengky said in a written statement on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

TS was sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Denpasar District Court on July 9, 2015, for violating Article 340 of the Indonesian Criminal Code. He was found guilty of the 2014 murder of an American woman, Sheila von Wiese-Mack, at the St. Regis Bali Resort in Nusa Dua, Badung. Von Wiese-Mack was the mother of Heather Lois Mack (HLM), Tommy’s girlfriend at the time. Von Wiese-Mack was killed by Tommy in collaboration with Heather.

Heather was released on parole on October 29, 2021, and was deported by the Denpasar Immigration Detention Center (Rudenim) on November 2, 2021. After serving his term and receiving several remissions for good behavior, Tommy was granted full release from Kerobokan Penitentiary on February 17, 2026, and was immediately transferred to Rudenim Denpasar on February 20, 2026.

"TS's deportation was conducted through I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, and TS was subjected to Immigration Administrative Measures in the form of deportation based on Article 75, paragraph (1) of Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration," Sengky stated.

In addition to his expulsion from Indonesia, Rudenim Denpasar has proposed to include Tommy's name on the permanent blacklist. "Referring to Article 102 of Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration, the banning of foreigners can be applied for up to ten years, or even for life, for those deemed to seriously threaten public security and order," Sengky added.
