TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said five Indonesians remain missing and unaccounted for since a fire broke out in Hong Kong last week. Meanwhile, the ministry confirmed the safety of 125 Indonesian citizens in the major fire that devastated the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Tai Po.
"As of December 3, 2025, the estimated number of Indonesian citizens residing in the apartment complex was 140, with 125 of them confirmed safe," according to a written statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, December 4, 2025, as quoted by Antara.
The number of deceased Indonesians remains at 9, while another 1 has been receiving medical attention in the hospital, stated the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is noted that all of the 140 Indonesian citizens residing in Wang Fuk Court are domestic workers, according to the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Hong Kong.
The major fire that struck the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po, Hong Kong, last Wednesday resulted in at least 159 deaths, 79 injuries, and 31 others still missing.
A total of 21 people from the main contractor, scaffold sub-contractors, fire alarm, and technical consultants have been detained by the Hong Kong authorities in connection with the major fire case.
According to investigators, bamboo scaffolding and plastic window coverings are suspected to be the cause of the rapid spread of the fire, engulfing several floors within minutes.
Meanwhile, last Sunday, the spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yvonne Mewengkang, ensured that the Indonesian consulate had formed a family coordination team to assist in repatriating the bodies of Indonesian citizens who died in the fire.
She said the team is responsible for handling the communication with the victims' families.
Regarding the process of identifying the victims' bodies, Yvonne mentioned that several Indonesian victims have been successfully identified, while the identification of other victims may require DNA samples.
Considering that the identification process and coordination with local authorities are still ongoing, Yvonne was unable to specify when the bodies of the Indonesian citizens can be repatriated to their homeland.
