TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned amid nationwide protests led by students and opposition parties over the leaked medical college entrance exam papers scandal, according to a Hindustan Times report as cited by Antara on Saturday.
Earlier this week, Abhijeet Dipke, leader and founder of the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party, asserted that protests would continue across the country until Dharmendra Pradhan steps down.
Clashes between protesters and security forces were inevitable during the peaceful protests. According to The Times of India, the unrest resulted in approximately 130 police officers and 65 protesters being injured.
The Hindustan Times reported that police fired tear gas at protesters. This action was taken after several people allegedly damaged a police post at the entrance to the protest site in the Tolstoy Marg area of New Delhi.
In response to the escalating crisis, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this week that the government has established special courts to fast-track the case and thoroughly investigate the exam leak case.
The Cockroach Party is a satirical political movement launched in May 2026.
The movement quickly attracted millions of followers on social media and gained support from opposition politicians and activists.
The satirical party's Instagram account now has more than 20 million followers, surpassing the official account of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has around 9 million followers.
Abhijeet Dipke recently returned from the United States in early June to lead a protest in New Delhi demanding reforms to India's education system.
According to the Hindustan Times, Dipke, now 30, had previously moved to the United States to pursue postgraduate studies at Boston University in Massachusetts.
The controversy surrounding the exam leak has threatened the future of more than 10 million students, and some have reportedly lost their lives.
The Indian Express reported that the scandal led to the annulment of the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) results for May 2026. This sparked public unrest, with two students reportedly committing suicide.
