ICMI's Jimly Urges Prabowo to Suspend BoP Duties Amid Iran Tensions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jimly Asshiddiqie, chairperson of the advisory board of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), has suggested that Indonesia temporarily suspend its obligations in the Board of Peace (BoP), an international body initiated by Donald Trump.

Jimly said the proposal was a response to the recent joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran.

“I feel there are two things that have made Donald Trump very pleased with Indonesia, and we could reduce one of them by half,” Jimly said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, March 5.

He said Indonesia could declare a postponement of its membership obligations in the Board of Peace for two reasons.

First, Indonesia should suspend its participation until the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran subsides. Jimly argued that the sudden and unilateral strikes by the US and Israel on Iran could lead the public to view the body established by Trump not as a “Board of Peace,” but as a “Board of Power.”

Second, he said Indonesia should delay its obligations until there is clear recognition of Palestinian independence by Israel.

“The second reason is until there is assurance of Israel’s recognition of Palestinian independence. Once there is certainty, we can become active again. That is my suggestion,” said Jimly, who previously served as chief justice of Indonesia’s Constitutional Court.

However, Jimly emphasized that Indonesia should not withdraw entirely from the organization.

“We would still remain a member. After all, Donald Trump is already pleased with us. With these two points, we can reduce our obligations by half by postponing them,” he said.
