TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) estimated that activities surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup generated economic turnover of up to Rp5.03 trillion (around US$300 million), driven by both broadcast-related businesses and community events across the country.
Kadin Indonesia Deputy Chairperson for Regional Economic Empowerment Kukrit Suryo said the calculation covered various economic activities from the preparation phase through the tournament, including broadcasting operations, advertising spending, sponsorships, product promotions, and increased sales of electronic devices and merchandise.
The figure also included transactions from the hotel, restaurant, and café (Horeka) sectors, public viewing events, and sales by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) at various events, including the 2026 People’s Festival.
“The 2026 World Cup shows how an international sporting event can drive economic activity across various sectors,” Kukrit said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.
He said the economic benefits of the tournament were not limited to large companies and national brands but also created opportunities for hotels, restaurants, food vendors, creative industry players, service providers, and MSMEs in various regions.
How Did the World Cup Generate Rp5.03 Trillion?
According to Kadin Indonesia’s calculation, around Rp1.76 trillion came from product promotions through on-air advertising, while Rp850 billion was generated from commercial off-air activities. The Horeka sector contributed around Rp2.4 trillion, along with additional economic activity from various community events.
Kukrit said the achievement demonstrated that global sporting events could create broad economic benefits when supported by collaboration between the government, businesses, broadcasters, regional administrations, security institutions, and the public.
Beyond the direct economic turnover, he said the 2026 World Cup also had the potential to create wider multiplier effects by encouraging public consumption and business investment in televisions, projectors, set-top boxes, audio systems, seating capacity, and food and beverage services.
The impact was reflected in the growth of the accommodation, food, and beverage sectors, which expanded 13.14 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, making it one of Indonesia’s fastest-growing sectors.
A survey by Lokadata conducted from July 7 to 13, 2026, also highlighted strong public participation during the tournament and its economic impact at the community level.
Lokadata Chief Data Officer Suwandi Ahmad said the survey showed that World Cup-related economic benefits reached local communities. Around 78.1 percent of respondents said they attended public viewing events at least once during the tournament.
Participants spent an average of Rp51,000 per viewing event, or around Rp145,000 per person throughout the tournament.
“Most of the spending went toward food and beverages, internet data packages, and other supporting needs, allowing many MSMEs to benefit from the economic activity,” Suwandi said.
