TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - ON Thursday, February 19, 2026, Arianto Tawakal, 14, did not return home in Tual, Maluku. He was supposed to be with his older brother, NKT, 15. Instead, NKT came home alone around 7am local time, grimacing in pain from a broken wrist.
NKT returned with a friend, riding pillion on Arianto’s motorcycle. Sandy Tawakal, the eldest sibling, said only their father was at home at the time. The family soon received the devastating news that Arianto had been in an accident. “Our father immediately broke down in tears in front of the house,” Sandy told Tempo on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
Arianto died at Karel Sadsuitubun Regional General Hospital in Watdek, on an island across from Tual, at around 1pm Eastern Indonesia Time. He succumbed to injuries after being struck with a helmet by 2nd Brig. Mesias Victoria Siahaya, 22, a member of Company 1, Battalion C of the Maluku Regional Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob). His injuries worsened when he fell from his motorcycle. He lay unconscious on the asphalt for some time.
The incident occurred between 6am and 7am. Before the assault, Arianto and NKT had just finished performing the dawn prayer at a mosque in South Dullah Island subdistrict, Tual. After praying, they headed home, which was only about 200 meters away.
Each rode his own motorcycle. They were traveling from Ngadi village toward Jalan Panglima Mandala in Fiditan village when the helmet strike occurred.
