TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hamas reaffirms that it will not disarm unless an independent Palestinian state is established. This strong statement from Hamas is a fresh rebuke to the key demand of Israel to end the war in Gaza.
Reported by Al Arabiya, the negotiations between Hamas and Israel, assisted by mediators, for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, ended in a deadlock. On Tuesday, Qatar and Egypt, the mediators, acknowledged that as part of the negotiations, Hamas must hand over its arms to the Western-backed Palestinian Authority.
Hamas, in a statement, said it could not yield its right for armed resistance unless "an independent, fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital" is established. Israel regards the disarmament of Hamas as a key condition for any agreement to end the conflict, something the resistance group is unwilling to do.
Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described a future independent Palestinian state as a platform to destroy Israel. According to Netanyahu, Israel must retain security control over the Palestinian territory.
Netanyahu also criticized several countries, including the UK and Canada, for announcing plans to recognize the Palestinian state.
The genocide in Gaza escalated after Hamas' attacks on Israel in October 2023, killing over 60,000 Palestinians and triggering a humanitarian disaster with most of the enclave devastated.
