TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. has announced plans to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft from the United States as part of its long-term strategy.
Vice President Corporate Secretary Cahyadi Indrananto said one of the company’s key strategic goals is to expand its fleet to 120 aircraft over the next five years.
“The long-term strategy is to optimize routes and expand the network to meet high demand, one of which is to increase the fleet to about 120 aircraft and open up to 100 routes in the next five years,” Cahyadi told Tempo on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Cahyadi also welcomed the agreement between President Prabowo Subianto and U.S. President Donald Trump on reciprocal tariffs. As part of the 19 percent tariff deal, Indonesia is required to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft from the U.S.
“This is in line with the company’s long-term strategy,” he said.
According to Garuda Indonesia’s official website, the airline currently operates a total of 77 aircraft. The fleet includes Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 737-800NG, Airbus A330-200, Airbus A330-300, and Airbus A330-900neo models.
“As of May 31, 2025, the average age of our fleet is 13.06 years,” the website states.
Despite the ambitious plan, Garuda Indonesia is still working to secure funding for the aircraft purchase. Cahyadi said the company is in ongoing discussions with several potential financiers, and some parties have shown interest.
“Some parties have shown interest in providing funding,” he noted.
However, he declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the discussions.
“Since this is a work in progress, I cannot provide the details yet, but hopefully the process will be smooth and we will announce it at the earliest opportunity,” he added.
