TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Deputy Chief of the Indonesian National Police, Commissioner General Dedi Prasetyo, stated that the Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) has formed a team to investigate alleged illegal logging in West Sumatra. "Bareskrim has formed a team and will collaborate with the West Sumatra Regional Police," said Dedi Prasetyo while inspecting the Ante Mortem Post at Bhayangkara Hospital, Padang, on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

Public scrutiny has focused on illegal logging and deforestation following a flash flood that hit Padang last week. The flash flood carried not only mud and water, but also wood and tree trunks.

Dedi Prasetyo emphasized that the Police, as law enforcement officials, will not remain silent in the face of alleged illegal logging activities.

Previously, the Chairperson of House Commission IV (DPR), Siti Hediati Hariyadi (Titiek Soeharto), also addressed the issue of illegal logging during her visit to Padang on November 30, 2025. She emphasized that any illicit activities that could harm nature, the environment, and the ecosystem must be eradicated. "All illicit logging or mining activities in the upstream area must be brought under control, as they have a wide-ranging impact on downstream communities," she said.

If logging activities in the upstream area are permitted, Titiek stated, then the permits must be revoked. "With the current level of rainfall, the impact is already significant, let alone with heavier rain," she added.
