TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A landslide struck Babakan Cibudah Hamlet, Pasir Langu Village, Cisarua District, West Bandung Regency, West Java, early Saturday morning, January 24, 2026. This disaster claimed lives and prompted plans to relocate residents.
From this incident, several facts were discovered, including fatalities, missing persons, and the alleged cause of the landslide.
The following is a summary of key facts from the incident:
1. Eight People Died, 82 Remain Missing
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded eight deaths as a result of the landslide. Additionally, 82 people are still missing and are being searched for by a joint team. A total of 23 people were reported to have survived the incident.
The landslide affected 113 people from 34 families. Officers in the field are still collecting data on the number of damaged houses.
2. Landslide Occurred While Residents Were Asleep
The landslide occurred around 2:30 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), while most residents were still asleep. Asep Sehabudin, Head of the West Bandung Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), stated that the landslide was triggered by heavy rain that had been pouring down on the Cisarua area since Friday afternoon, January 23, 2026.
The landslide buried residential areas on the slopes or cliffs of the hills, complicating rescue efforts.
3. West Bandung on Emergency Alert Status
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that the West Bandung region is currently on emergency alert status for floods, flash floods, extreme weather, and landslides. This status is in effect from October 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026.
In addition, the West Java Provincial Government has also declared a Hydrometeorological Disaster Emergency Alert Status, which is valid until April 30, 2026.
4. West Java Governor Decides to Relocate Residents
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi emphasized that residents affected by the landslide will be relocated because the area is considered highly vulnerable. According to him, the hilly terrain, where vegetable gardens grow, makes the soil unstable and poses a risk of repeated landslides.
"The area here should be reforested. Residents are being relocated because of the high potential for landslides," said Dedi. In the meantime, residents are being asked to rent houses for two months with assistance of Rp10 million per family. Meanwhile, families of the deceased will receive compensation of Rp25 million per family.
5. Land Conversion Found at Landslide Site
Dedi also revealed that land conversion was found around the landslide site. The area was identified as a vegetable garden that used plastic mulch and was cleared to the top of the hill.
According to Dedi, the ground conditions at the site are extremely dangerous due to the pile-up and potential for collapse, making it difficult to evacuate victims still buried under the landslide material.
